My Heroes

The other day I was running at the YMCA by my house.  They have been doing construction in the back so part of the track was cut off by a construction fence.  I looked up and noticed that there was a huge building that was going up.  I assumed it was for the sports that takes place year round (baseball, softball, t-ball, soccer, flag football, etc).  All of my kids started playing their sports with the YMCA.  It is a wonderful league for when they are small and as they get older, they joined other leagues that are more competitive.
Later on in the day I came across an article about the structure that was being built and I was in awe.
Three individuals, Rodney Finke, Allan Wallace, and Mack Hoehner (my heroes) went to the YMCA Langham Creek and asked if they could start a Miracle League Chapter.  The Miracle League is an adaptive sports program for kids with mental and physical disabilities.  Children (and families) who normally would not be able to participate in sports will now have an opportunity to!

According to Your Houston News,
The complex, which is able to serve more than 1,000 individuals with special needs, is Houston’s first sports complex of its kind.

“Nearly 22 percent of U.S. households have one or more children under the age of 17 with special needs,” said Palmer Hestley, YMCA brand marketing and communications manager. “This complex provides a respite for parents and caregivers who are able to see their children enjoy playing sports for the first time.”

Children will be able to play baseball comfortably and safely because of The Miracle League Sports program. An important benefit of having the specially designed field is the custom-designed, rubberized turf field. The grass field makes it easier and safer for children in wheelchairs and with other mobility disability devices.

I love  that these three men had a vision and put forward the time and effort to see it through.  Their vision will positively impact so many lives.

My question for you is this:  Do you know anyone that could benefit from something like this?
