I will admit that I am not the greatest cook! In fact, I would say it could be better and it could be worse. With that being said, I love to pass by the HEB chef cooking station when I am shopping because they are usually cooking simple recipes with “sophisticated” ingredients. These 3 pantry must haves were all discovered while shopping at HEB. Lemon oil is an ingredient I have never used before. The HEB chef drizzled it over cooked salmon and it tasted so good! Martha Stewart says to keep lemon oil on hand when cooking with fish and when making salad dressings. You can also drizzle on asparagus, broccoli, and other vegetables. I will say drizzling it on salmon is REALLY good!I will admit this second item intimidated me because of the word truffle. I have heard about truffles and how expensive they are, but never really understood where they come from and what they are. Wikipedia says a truffle is the fruiting body of a subterranean Ascomycete fungus, predominantly one of the many species of the genus Tuber. While I was sampling the lemon oil salmon dish, the chef also used truffle salt. A little bit goes a long way and the jar I spent $8.00 on will probably last me a whole year. You can use truffle salt on any of your fish dishes and really any place you would use regular salt. My friend Laura said that they sometimes sprinkle a little on popcorn.Bacon Jam is an ingredient that I have previously blogged about. It has such a yummy, unique flavor. I have used bacon jam in a cold broccoli salad and in mac and cheese. You can also spread it on grilled cheese sandwiches, mix it with ground beef for a wonderful meatloaf, and add to brie and crackers.
So there you have it, three interesting ingredients that will make your home cooking a little more sophisticated.
