Why is Houston a great place to take a family vacation?
- It has great food/restaurants
- It has tons of different activities
- It is a pretty inexpensive city to visit
- The people are very friendly
- It is a very diverse and multicultural city
(My friends Melissa and Jessica helped me come up with this list…they are SUPER moms and are always taking their kids on adventures around Houston.)
What can I do if I visit Houston?
All of the farms:
These farms are located right outside of Houston and have a variety of activities: picking strawberries, blue berries, blackberries, fishing, hay rides, hay maze, sand mountain, slide mountain, animals, and barrel train ride.
Houston Arboretum and Nature Center: In a nutshell, a very cool nature trail.
Aquarium (Disclaimer: This is not a fancy aquarium. It is very small). The downtown Houston Aquarium is a small aquarium with an outside that has a few rides for the kids to ride. It is fun to have lunch here and let the kids ride the different rides.
The Houston Zoo: The Houston Zoo is AMAZING. It is definitely a “must do” if you come to Houston. You can bring your own food and drinks to save money. Make sure you find out what time the giraffe feeding is so that your kids can feed the giraffes! Check out Jessica’s blog on the Houston Zoo.
Herman Park/train: Herman Park is right outside the Houston Zoo. You can let your children ride the small train around the park.
Miller Outdoor Theater: Provides free summer concerts, musical theatre, music concerts, children’s theatre, and more for Houston
Discovery Green: This is a park in downtown Houston. They have different events going on during weekends and the summer.
Houston has a “museum district” where you will find all of the museums and the zoo.
Houston Museum of Natural Science: This is another “MUST” if you visit Houston. There are so many things to do and see here.
From their website “Museum houses the Burke Baker Planetarium, Wortham GIANT Screen Theatre, Cockrell Butterfly Center and a fascinating variety of permanent exhibit areas that examine astronomy, space science, Native American culture, paleontology, energy, chemistry, gems and minerals, seashells, Texas wildlife and much more. In addition, the museum frequently presents traveling exhibitions on a variety of topics.”
My kids love going to the Butterfly Center and also seeing the dinosaurs.
The Health Museum of Houston: Most people know that Houston has one of the best medical centers in the world. People travel from all over to receive treatment in Houston. If you are interested in science and health, this is a small museum that is fun to visit. My kids liked going here for a small amount of time.
Art Car Museum: Every year, Houston has a parade called the Art Car Parade. People decorate their cars and turn them into art. It is a fun parade. The Art Car Museum houses some of these cars. This museum is located in a fun part of Houston called the Heights. This is something “different” that you will not be able to do in other cities. The museum is very small but kids love seeing the cars. For a great day, go have lunch at a fun outdoor restaurant, Cedar Creek Café, visit the Art Car Museum, and then check out some of the fun shops in the Heights.
Galveston is to the south of Houston (about thirty minutes from downtown). They have beaches so if you want to have a beach day, head to Galveston. ( Note: Galveston beach is ok. It is NOTHING like Florida, though). Galveston has a neat historic downtown and is worth spending a day here.
NASA: (Space Center Houston) Everyone should visit NASA if you are coming to Houston.
Moody Gardens: Is an educational attraction that houses plants, fish, and animals. There are huge glass pyramids that house interactive exhibits. Check out the website to find more information. I feel like you either love Moody Gardens or think it is just ok. My friends who are into science, plants, animals and things like this love Moody Gardens.
Kemah Boardwalk: Do you kids love to ride lots of rides? If so, check out the Kemah Boardwalk that is near Galveston.
Schlitterbahn: This is a waterpark in Galveston that is great. Parking is free and you can bring in your own food and ice chest coolers into the park (which is a rare thing). I like it because it has things for all ages, even the little ones.
Galleria: If you are a shopper, you must check out the Galleria. It has an ice skating rink and several hundred stores, many of which are fancy.
Outlet malls: There are several outlet malls in the greater Houston area. Outlet malls have major brand stores but carry items at a reduced price. Houston Premium Outlets (near my house) and Katy Mills Outlet are two good ones.
Professional Sports Teams:
If you come to Houston, check out one of our teams:
Baseball: Houston Astros
Football: Houston Texans
Basketball: Houston Rockets
Soccer: Houston Dynamo
Fun things that can be found around town:
Top Golf: A cross between a golfing driving range and a golf video game.
Dave and Busters: Arcade, bowling, food, and fun
Monkey Joes: Bounce jumping houses for kids
This is a lot to do….
My question for you is this: Who wants to come to Houston for a vacation?
