Giving Experiences Instead of Things: Why You Should Consider This For Your Next Occasion

Recently I was trying to decide what I was going to buy my mom and mother-in-law for Mother’s Day.  They both have everything, so I didn’t want to just buy something to buy something.  I decided that I would try and find a cool experience that they would enjoy.

Isabella had her First Communion Saturday morning, so both sets of parents would be spending all day at our house.

My friend Stephanie Walsh from Stephanie’s Special Occasion made the cake!

I was telling Dave that we should come up with something fun to do to entertain all of the moms who would be at our house.  Christa love’s using Thumbtack (a free online services that matches customers with local professionals.  There are very 1100 types of services in categories such as home, wellness, events, and lessons), so I decided to see how much it would cost to hire a single musician to come to my house on Saturday and play live music.

I went to the website and inputted that I was looking for someone to come play music for around 3 hours.  They asked me a few questions (date/time of the event, how many people would be there, the age of the guests, the type of event, genre of music, type of instrument, and examples of songs and singers I want to hear). They then sent out the requests to all of the people who have signed up that would fit my criteria.  I immediately received an offer from Scott, a musician who has a band, but also does solo performances.  He sent me a youtube video of a gig he played so that I could see how he played.  I also received another offer a few hours later, but had already decided Scott was my guy.  I was really impressed with his  music and so we agreed on a time and price (he would play from 4-8 PM).  He was so reasonably priced and that is why I decided to hired him for 4 hours instead of 2 or 3!!!   Here is his website!

Saturday afternoon we were all hanging out in the backyard, the kids were swimming, and then at 3 PM Scott showed up (he said he usually arrives about an hour ahead of time to set up). He was very nice and professional.  He brought in his equipment and set it up on our patio.  The mom’s were so surprised and couldn’t believe they were about to be serenaded.  We spent the next 4 hours having the best time.  Scott was even better than I could have imagined.

He played so many fun songs (Robert Earl Keen, Beatles, Jack Johnson, Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, Beach Boys, and much more).  Almost everything we requested he knew!  What I really liked about him was that when we weren’t making requests, he chose songs that we love, but forget about.  Also, after I booked the gig he asked if I had any special requests.  I asked if he knew Question by Old 97 (this was the song I walked to the aisle to on our wedding day).  Scott didn’t know it, but learned it so that he could play it for us!!!!!! Here is a video clip of him playing!

Overall, it was such a special day and can’t say enough about how glad I was that I decided to think outside of the box for a mother’s day present.  We can’t wait to hire Scott again (it would be fun to get a group of friends together and everyone pitch in a few dollars).  He was VERY reasonable and SOOO GOOD!!!!

I could not get over how easy Thumbtack was to use.  I would use it in the future and have thought about possible gigs (chef to come over and teach a cooking glass, chef to come over and cook, artist to come teach a project for a kid’s birthday party).  Christa has hired bartenders, balloon artists, face painters, carpenters, electricians, etc. using thumbtack.  I like the idea of hiring someone to come to your house for an evening with friends and splitting the cost.  You might even pay less for this type of evening compared to going out to dinner and drinks with friends.

My question for you, have you used thumbtack and if so, what did you buy?
